Check out these two logo's. They are both logos for the same chiropractic clinic here in my hometown. Both of them share basically the same layout, and yet one looks vastly different from the other. The biggest visual difference between the two is that the one on the left looks super blurry, and a bit ugly if I'm being honest. The second logo looks crisp and clean.
Why is that and why is it important?
Well, the logo on the left is what's called a raster image, and the one on the right is a vector graphic. The biggest practical difference is that the raster image is made up of pixels, and as a result when it is scaled up or down, like for a logo on a website or billboard, it doesn't retain the same visual quality. However, the pixels allow raster images to handle complex details like gradients better, making them the better choice for a social media post or graphic.
Meanwhile, a vector graphic is based on points and lines, and as a result can be scaled up or down (think zoom in or out) without losing that crisp visual appearance and getting pixelated. This makes it a much better option for using it for logos or signs.
At the end of the day, having a pixelated logo or image is a great way for people to immediately discount you in their head. They think "Oh this guy can't even put get his images to look good, he must not know what he is doing, how is he going to fall short when he's doing work for me?".
Not a great look. I found the raster logo one night just going through some websites of local businesses, and within a few minutes I was able to recreate it as a vector graphic. As a result, this logo is going to be a digital asset instead of a liability, and will increase the digital "curb appeal" of the website it's on.
Your logo represents you and your brand, make sure it looks good.
